I was born and raised in Maine.  As a child, I loved winter and all the fun that came with it: ice skating, building snow forts and snow men, sledding, having snowball fights, making snow angels... you get the idea.  When I got older and started having to scrape ice off my windshield in the morning, or shovel the walkway, or pay the heating bill, I began to dread winter.  In fact, I would refer to Autumn as The Season of Impending Doom, and couldn't enjoy it because I was so NOT looking forward to winter.  Now that I have lived in Tennessee for nine years, where winters are mild and summers are so, so long (side note, now I call Spring The Season of Impending Doom. I'm never satisfied, apparently), I have come to get excited about Fall: cooler days, crunchy leaves, beautiful foliage, and-- yes please-- Pumpkin Spice everything.  This is also the most popular season for family portraits, which brings me to my reason for this post.  If you're planning to book a Fall session, don't wait!  Here are some family sessions from seasons past to inspire you!

This post is a little more technical then a lot of the others I write, but I wanted to talk a little about the benefits of black and white photography. As you can see from my other blog posts and Facebook images, I mostly choose to keep the images I create in color.  Sometimes, however, I find that an image needs to be in black and white instead.  There are a few reasons for this.  First, and most "unromantic" of them, sometimes converting an image to black and white can save it from being thrown out.  For example, if a subject is standing near a red barn and half their face gets a red cast from the light bouncing off it, that image may look too strange to keep.  But in a black and white image, that red glow won't be detected.  There are times when the green grass makes subjects' faces also look rather green, but correcting the color balance for an accurate skin tone throws off the rest of the colors in the composition.

Second, a mentor once told me, "If the fact that an image is in color isn't making it a better image, see what it will look like in black and white."  The images below are not characterized by the color of their backgrounds and settings, so black and white is absolutely called for here!

On the flip side of that coin, sometimes the color of an image adds too much, and is just plain distracting!  Our eyes are drawn to gaze on warm colors (like yellows and reds) and if those colors are pulling the attention away from the main character of the image, a monotone palette keeps those distractions at bay.

My favorite reason for converting to black and white is to better convey the emotion of an image.  There is a simplicity and timelessness to some moments that I capture, and I think black and white keeps them timeless and simple.

I had the joy of photographing this little guy named Buddy for a Special Kids Session.  What a sweet boy!

Buddy was almost all smiles, and had a little mischievous side as well.  You can see it in this shot, which happens to be my favorite:

Buddy is playful and sweet, and he and his siblings were a lot of fun to work with.  It is a true honor to capture the personalities of the people who hire me, whether in weddings or family portrait sessions.  And because I believe that every parent deserves to have photographs of their children that they can be proud of, Special Kids Sessions hold a "special" place in my heart!

Jaclyn Paige Photography is proud to be Tennessee's first and only photographer to be certified by Special Kids Photography of America. Call me at (865) 363-4568 or Contact Me Through My Website to schedule a session for your child.

Hello everyone!  This is a different kind of post than my norm, because until now, every picture I've ever posted has been of a client on their wedding day or with their kids... so this post is a lot more personal!  I'd like to introduce my daughter, who we refer to as Little C when we talk about her in cyberspace:

She brings us such joy!  And she has quickly become my favorite person to photograph.

We used our studio lights and backdrops in our own little living room for these portraits.  "The Studio to Go" set up can be used in your home, too!

(Couldn't resist that last one. Little C loves looking out the window.)  Thanks for checking in and letting me gush about our sweet little girl!  Give me a call at (865) 363-4568 or contact me through my website if you'd like to schedule your in-home (or outdoor) session with the little ones that bring you joy. I know firsthand that they grow up too fast not to do it soon!

Last week I talked about the benefits of cloudy skies during a portrait session. Today, while the sun beams all around, seems like a great time to show off some images with (you guessed it) sunny skies!

My absolute favorite way to use sunshine in a portrait is for backlighting.  Backlighting, as these pictures show, gives a glowy quality to an image, sometimes creating an ethereal scene.

Technically speaking, backlighting also serves the important function of separating a subject from the background.  With this family edged in light, their hair doesn't blend in with the background. Our eyes are not distracted by trying to sort out the background from the family.  This is a good thing, since it is, of course, a family portrait.

These backlighting examples have the same effect, though less dramatically than above.

Here's another thing I have learned about working with sunshine during a portrait session: when the sun lights up a scene, the image can easily end up with a color cast because of the setting.  When we're out in the woods on a summer day with lush vegetation all around us, we don't notice that our skin is greener than it would be if we were standing on an open mountain top.  We don't see it, but the camera does, and it's something I watch out for in deciding on a setting and especially when I am processing the image afterwards. Check out how the sunshine can affect the "color" of the images below:

Just as clouds can add to a more serious tone of an image if we choose to let it, sunshine naturally adds a happy, light, joyful air to portraits even if it's not directly shining on the subjects.  In the pictures below, everyone's smiles help add to that happy feeling, too!

Hooray for sunshine!
